Biopolymers

100 % Bio. 100 % Performance.

SUKANO® biobased masterbatches and our bio-loy polymer alloys put ultimate performance in extruded rigid & thin films and molded parts from PLA. SUKANO® PLA polymer carrier is made from IngeoTM biopolymer.

Rigid films

Rigid biopolymer films are typically manufactured in a thickness range of 0.1 to 1.2 mm using film or sheet extrusion lines. Cooling is achieved by pulling the film through a set of cooling rolls before the film is wound up on a roll. Further processing typically includes thermoforming to produce various kinds of packaging applications, such as drinking cups, food trays or thermoformed lids.

Typical requirements for processing of the film or final functional or                                              optical properties of the application included:

  • Improved denesting to enable cup separation in filling lines
  • Low haze & high transparency to see the content
  • Excellent sealability & weldability for fast processing
  • Excellent printability for decoration or to provide information
  • Transparent or opaque colors to improve visual appeal
  • Color shade correction to adjust yellow color tint of RPET
  • High opacity and UV for content protection
  • No dust attraction for a clean appearance

To meet these demands Sukano offers a range of masterbatches for flat and thermoformed films:

Thin films

Oriented films are thin films stretched and oriented in one (monoaxially) or two (biaxially) directions. Thicknesses vary from about < 1µ to 250µ. Oriented films are very versatile and are typically used for shrink film labels, liding film for trays, food packaging or gift wrapping.

For good performance, typical requirements are:

  • Reduction of COF for fast processing
  • Minimum haze for excellent optical performance
  • High opacitiy for decoration
  • Reliable UV protection for content protection
  • High dispersion & surface gloss for high end applications

Molded parts

In an injection molding process the thermoplastic biopolymer is molten in an extruder and forced by the screw-type plunger into a cold mold. The biopolymer will solidify in the same shape of the cavity and is ejected at the end of the injection molding cycle. The process provides high production rates, repeatable high tolerances of a final part.

Applications for bio polymers include household ware, cosmetics, housings and decoration. For good performance, typical requirements are:

  • Easy filling of cavities to increase productivity and part definition
  • High impact properties to increase the range of application
  • High Biobased Carbon Content to improve sustainability
  • Excellent surface quality to improve optical performance
  • High transparency to see the content of packaging applications
  • Reduced injection pressure to enable filling of cavity
  • Compostable to comply with end of life options
